In some ways, the creation of Good Vibe Squad can be traced back to a mastermind in Puerto Rico where Preston and I met for the first time. Over the years, masterminds have taught us more about business and philosophy than we could have ever learned on our own. This is a story about one of our favorite mastermind groups.
Key Takeaways
- Mastermind groups and events can accelerate learning, but they’re not all created equal.
- When we realized one group wasn’t providing the value it once was, we decided to take action and form our own group.
- We nicknamed this group the Steak of the Union as a joke and the name stuck.
- The group is made up of some of our best friends and we still regularly meet quarterly.
- The next GVS mastermind event is in the works.
The Truth About Masterminds
Mastermind groups are only as good as their members and the intentions set by the group’s creators. Unfortunately, that means not all mastermind groups are created equal. When a group starts accepting hundreds of new members, for example, it becomes hard to vet who is joining. When we noticed this happening in one of our groups, Preston and I decided to take matters into our own hands.
We ended up forming our own mini mastermind group on the side with other members who felt the same way and shared similar values. It was really important for us to connect with others who shared an abundance mindset and weren’t afraid to try new things. We ended up meeting for dinner one night and that dinner turned into a quarterly tradition.
Explaining the Name
The first meal we ever shared together was a steak dinner, so one of us jokingly called it the “Steak of the Union.” The name was a joke, but it stuck and that’s what we decided to call our mastermind group from then on. We all share a passion for business and good food, so it made sense. We’ve even planned a trip to Japan together to enjoy authentic wagyu steaks.
Where We’ve Been
The Steak of the Union has been meeting quarterly for years now, so it’s hard for me to remember all the cities we’ve been to. One of our most recent stops was Denver, Colorado, which was followed by New York City, New York. I was especially excited for our NYC stop because I used to live there but I hadn’t been back in a while, and it was nice to see what’s changed.
We might have ordered a little too much together haha…
